The Difficulty Of Sharing

26 February – This is the pastoral text of Fr Reuter: When a schoolgirl gives half of her sandwich to a hungry beggar, she is sharing her lunch with God. KariMelissa describes this sandwich as ‘Black Forest Ham and Swiss’ – how can you share a sandwich like that?

You would like to have it all to yourself, wouldn’t you? It isn’t hard to be selfish – you have had lots of practice already! All you have to do is: Don’t share. You are hungrier than the beggar is, and it’s your sandwich, not his. The beggar is lazy, that’s why he’s poor. His parents didn’t teach him to ask nicely. He smells bad, very bad. He looks like … why, exactly like a beggar. You would share your sandwich with a schoolmate, but a beggar? I beg your pardon!

Well, okay, maybe a bit of a bite. You pinch off a size as big as your finger and give to the beggar. You’re happy with that?
